MAPSS was established in 1973, the Minnesota Association of Professional Soil Scientists (MAPSS) is the only organization representing the professional interests of soil scientists in Minnesota. MAPSS promotes the understanding and wise use of Minnesota's soil resources. Our members consist of professional soil scientists, consultants, researchers, teachers and students, as well as those who just have an interest in soils.

Soil!

what is soil?

Soil is a mixture of organic and inorganic material on the earth's surface in which plant material can grow.  It also includes a portion of water and air.  Organic material can include both living and dead matter.  Soil can not only be found on earth, but on other planets.  Movement of interstellar materials can even be tracked on soils of planets!

what do soil scientists do?

What don't we do?!  Soil scientist are teachers, regulators, environmental consultants, natural resource scientists, wetland scientists, septic system designers, landscapers, stormwater scientists, well installers, plant growers, turf managers, you! See actual soil scientist at work...

The MAPSS State Soil - the Lester Loam

The Lester Series consists of very deep, well drained soils that formed in loamy calcareous glacial till on ground moraines. Slopes ranged from 5 to 70 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 28 inches and mean annual soil temperature is about 49 degrees.

These soils formed under wooded vegetation that has been removed in many areas for agricultural production. Where used for crops, corn and soybeans are the principal ones. Corn yields ranges from 108 to 143 bushels/acre and soybean yields range from 27 to 44 bushels/acre, depending on slope and climate changes within the major land resource area (MRLA).

Lester soils are of moderate extent, occurring in 75 mapping units in 17 different counties in MLRA 103 in south-central Minnesota, which total over 600,000 acres.
