Job searching tips

Job searching tips

The following is a list of job searching tips culled from various sources and personal experiences (not in any specific order).  We hope they help!

  • Take time to build your professional network and do not let it lag behind once you have found your perfect job.  You don't know when you will need them again!
  • Have a personal business card.  There are many inexpensive business card companies online.  Add a few brief pieces of information about you on the card.
  • Have a specific email address for your job search.  Make it a little more official than casual.
  • Create a list of your skills and revise when needed.
  • Keep your resume up to date.
  • Your resume should be specific to the job in which you are applying and tell the company how you can save them moeny and how you can make them money.
  • Know about the company in which you are applying and/or interviewing.
  • After an interview send a thank you email within a few hours, then follow that by a hand written thank you card.
  • Go into the interview with ideas for the position (not too many).
  • Mentor other people searching for jobs.  This can help hone your skills.
  • Thank people who have helped you along with your job search process.

Make your resume to stand out

How do you do that without putting it on hot pink paper?  Here are some ideas.
  • Create a list of skills and revise when needed.  This list is what you use to build your resume.  Potential employers want to know what you bring to the company.
  • Keep your resume up to date.
  • Your resume should be specific to the job in which you are applying and tell the company how you can save them money and how you can make them money.
  • One page only!
  • Don't put everything in your resume.  It should be job specific and focused.
  • Add volunteer information if it has skills that are related to the jobs in which you are applying.
  • Again, keep it updated!  Even if you have a job.

Feel free to contact us with your ideas and input!  We will add them to these lists.

Network!

While it is important WHAT you know, it is equally important WHO you know.  Attend MAPSS events to keep in touch with other MAPSS members, some who might hire you or help you find a job in the future!

thank you

Send thank you emails and cards.  This will help the people remember you!

cover letter

Your cover letter should not be a resume.  It should be a little more personal with direct information about what you are going to do for the company.  However, you need to base this on the type of company you are applying. Don't send a goofy cover letter to a company that is a little conservative.  This means you have to know about the company.  Do your research!
