The twelfth annual Larson-Allmaras lecture on Emerging Issues in Soil and Water is set for 2:00-4:30PM Thursday 10th April 2014 in 335 Borlaug Hall on the St. Paul Campusof the University of Minnesota, http://www1.umn.edu/twincities/maps/BorH/. Thetheme of the lecture event will be "Soilsand Ecosystem Services". The featured speaker for this year's lecturewill be Dr. Diana H. Wall, UniversityDistinguished Professor & Professor of Biology and
Director of School of Global Environmental Sustainability at Colorado StateUniversity. The title of her lecture will be: “Soil Biodiversity, Ecosystem Services and Global EnvironmentalChallenges.”
Dr. Diana Wall is a preeminent global authority onthe structure and function of soil ecosystems, the services that theseecosystems provide, and the potential effects that human activities have on theability of soils to deliver these services. Much of her work has focused onnematode ecology in soil communities in hot deserts of the Southwestern UnitedStates and cold dry valleys of Antarctica. In addition to her seminal work inAntarctica, Dr. Wall and her collaborators and students have studied soilecology and biodiversity on all seven continents and in most major habitats,including deserts, forests, grasslands, agroecosystems, and cities. Dr. Wallhas received numerous awards and honors. Among those includes a Fellow of the American Association for theAdvancement of Science, the Ecological Society of America, and the Society ofNematology; a Fellow of the Aldo Leopold Leadership Program where she nowserves on its Advisory Board; and an Honorary Doctorate degree from the UtrechtUniversity, The Netherlands. Wall Valley in Antarctica was so named inrecognition of Dr. Wall's work in the continent's Dry Valleys. In 2013, she wasawarded the prestigious Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement.
