Good Morning, Gary,
Can you help us with generate webinar participation and feedback related to the following soil mapping technology?
The North Central Regional Center for Rural Development (NCRCRD) at Michigan State University is continuing our webinar series “Innovations in Agriculture and Rural Development.” Webinars feature technology that has been developed by the 12 North Central land-grants and all our webinars are free to anyone interested. Our primary goal is to help disseminate information regarding new innovations in agriculture. Our secondary goal is to help generate potential intermediate/end user feedback for technology developers. This is a great platform for industry to connect with university researchers.
Our last webinar this year is about efforts to improve soil information available to producers regarding precision agriculture.
Webinar Details
Title: Soil functional maps for crop management and planning
Date: Tuesday December 9, 2014
Time: 12:30 PM ET/11:30 AM CT
Webinar Description: The current available soil information from the USDA Soil Survey was not created with the detail necessary for precision management. Additionally, the soil maps were created based on how soils look different as opposed to how they function differently or the same. Research at Purdue University has created a soil mapping process that delivers soil properties on a continuous basis that predicts multiple soil properties across the field. The method creates maps of chemical properties which affect nutrition of crops, but also predicts physical properties which affect water availability. Both soil fertility and water availability are important for predicting crop performance. The resulting maps are flexible and can be combined to create different indices for specific outcomes. This method has been developed and streamlined to map large or small areas across the USA. Also, additional soil information can be added to the model to continuously improve the maps.
About Our Presenters:
Phillip R. Owens is an Associate Professor of Pedology/Soil Geomorphology in the Department of Agronomy at Purdue University. Dr. Owens research interests include soil and landscape processes, hydropedology and digital soil mapping.
